Cook Shire is a vibrant area, from the main township of Cook town to smaller outlying communities rich in indigenous history, agriculture, tourism and arts. Cook Shire is enriched by the unique contributions of its smaller communities, with Lakeland a national leader in agriculture and Laura world famous for its rock art. Cook Shire enjoys a gentle tropical climate with the wet season typically running from January to March, which is also the hottest portion of the year. During the wet season, there are risks of cyclones and flooding, while the arid season can bring bush fires. The number of people visiting Cook Shire and moving to our pretty region is growing steadily, as access and facilities improve across our communities. Lakeland is an hour south of Cook town, also on the Mulligan Highway, while Rossville and Barton are less than an hour away, also reached by bitumen roads. Farther north the road becomes gravel, with stretches of bitumen, and can be treacherous or impassable during the wet season. There are airports and airstrips in maximum areas of the Shire, with the largest in Cook town and Chen, and scheduled or charter flights available to those destinations. There is a regular bus service between Cairns and Cook town, as well as cruise ships, tour buses, hire vehicle companies and motorbike tours offering different options for exploring our back yard.
Saibai Island is located 8km south of papa Fresh Guinea, although the island is one of the largest in The Torres Strait it consists mostly of swampland with some high grassland areas. After the Second World War the enlisted men returned to the island, informing the community of a store on The Mainland they believed would produce the Saibai community with a sustainable future. Soon after, a combination of wet season rain and king tides flooded Saibai Island. Saibai's leader, Bamaga Gina, called a meeting to hold discussions regarding the problems being caused by this flooding and the affect it was having on the new water supply, the limited supply of wood for building and the area of land available for future housing concerns were increasing about the islands' skill to promote coming generations. The decision was made to relocate to the mainland. In 1946 the community purchased two luggers for the relocation. Arranged the erection of a changing medical post and store, a changing church was also erected. As more families arrived more housing was required, using the old army huts from the war and any building materials found many homes and a school for the children were built. The land inland of Red Island was chosen, an ideal location with two creeks for new water. As the fresh housing was slowly completed the families started to move from their temporary settlement to Bamaga, some families chose to remain at puttee Heads. Supplied the building materials for the housing and slowly the village was built. After a five year wait the people of Red Island Point were permitted to change the name of their village the name was changed to SEISIA. Blu has supervised the introduction and development of abundant community owned businesses.
